Recreation with online backgammon

Backgammon is a fun game that takes two persons to play it. It’s a board game that combines concentration and focus. It is somehow like chess. The basic principle is that you alternatively move the pieces on the squares of the board and try to get them from one part of it to the other. Each player has a color and he has to take into consideration when he makes the moves. The first one that gets all his pieces from one part of the board to the other and aligns them is the winner. These rules make online backgammon a very simple game that doesn’t involve as much thinking or strategizing like chess does. It is accessible to both children (who can learn from it) and to experts who play backgammon for money.

Online backgammon is one of the best ways to play this game for a number of different reasons. All you have to do is access any search engine on the Internet and search for sites which allow you to play backgammon. Online backgammon is more fun because it doesn’t have any of the inconveniences of the real life game. When you will take the decision to play online backgammon you will realize that it is one of the best moves you can make, especially if you’re a fan of the game. If you think it’s more difficult to play online, you are wrong. Any site that allows you to play online backgammon has specific instructions on how to follow some rules and enjoy yourself as well so, it will be easier than you ever imagined. A way to have fun, easier and faster is just a mouse click away from you.

Playing backgammon online is better and more fun than the real life game because it has more advantages and none of the disadvantages. The first problem that’s taken care of is the lack of a partner. If you want to play backgammon at home or in the park face to face with your opponent, you need a real life person because it’s a two player game. Playing online backgammon means that you don’t necessarily need another person to adjust his/her program and to make time to play with you. Having a virtual opponent means you will play against the computer. You can play against a real person even if you play online. There are certain online game rooms where a lot of people go to play several games they are passionate about with other people.

A disadvantage of the real life game is that you escape the time problem. Even if you have an opponent there’s always a possibility he will get bored and that can mean the game may stop or continue unpleasantly. When playing online backgammon you are the only one that decides when the game will end and how long it will last. Online, you can play 24/7 and you don’t have to worry about the missing pieces or about replacing everything in order when you’re done. Another fun thing with playing online backgammon is that nowadays the special sites have become more and more entertaining. One can have fun only by accessing the site without even playing the game. A problem with this type of game is that it is very attractive and captures attention for hours keeping the player in front of the computer. This way it discourages communication between people. Backgammon is a social game and, because it takes two persons to play, the two opponents have the chance to socialize and exchange ideas. However, online backgammon teaches you to focus on your target and obtain the desired results. Games like these are very useful for developing learning abilities like attention, perseverance and competition. They can even be a great encouragement for mathematical talents.

Playing online backgammon one can gain experience and probably get better at this game than the friends who don’t train themselves with a computer. This way the world of tournaments opens itself. Backgammon competitions are organized for those who are interested in challenges. Online backgammon tournaments are very popular nowadays for two reasons: respect and money. While in real life very few play backgammon for money there is a whole different story with online games. There are many who get addicted to playing online backgammon for money. Gambling is practiced by a lot of people today who are in search of new ways to earn money. They forget the main reason they wanted to win in the first and stop having fun. Playing backgammon for money can be considered a form of gambling. A paid account can be made on sites that accept online backgammon for money and the sum one pays is considered to be for betting. Playing backgammon for money is actually a good idea if you are an expert. There is no point in throwing money out the window so you shouldn’t play backgammon for money if you aren’t familiar with the game and the rules of the site. However, if you know you can win, why not earn some money and have fun at the same time?

It doesn’t matter in the end if you play backgammon for money or just for fun. It is a great way to spend your time with friends or home, by yourself and learn about some virtues like patience and perseverance. Backgammon is a very old and appreciated game with a life that has only brought joy to its players. Its existence will continue to bring joy to those who play online backgammon because it is now available everywhere through the facilities of the Internet at the simple click of a button.

6 Tips For Saving Gas

I feeling a bit like Letterman today. Let's do another list. This time it will only be 6 tips.

Since gas prices are so high, and only going to go up more, lets focus on saving some gas.

In the past months we have seen the price of gasoline soar higher than ever before, and this can be hard on people who have a budget that is tight. Even though gas prices have come down a slight bit, you still will want to do everything you possibly can to save on the money you have to pay out for gas. There are a variety of ways that you can save gas, and save money.

  1. Start Carpooling
    • Carpooling is a great idea for fellow students and fellow employees both. If you can find people that are going to the same place you are you can save gas by riding together. It may be a good idea to trade off on who is driving from week to week so no one person gets stuck having to drive all the time. If you have to take your children to school or other functions you can also work on trading off with your friends and neighbors to take them there.
  2. Public Transportation
    • If it is possible you can take public transportation to work instead of driving your car. Not only will this save you money on gas, but you will also be able to relax and not worry about having to drive through all that rush hour traffic. You may even be able to fit in a quick nap on your way to work or on your way home.
  3. Price Shop
    • Often it may be so convenient to buy your gas at the small gas station just up the road, but to save some money on gas you may want to check the prices at other gas stations that are nearby as well. Even if the difference is only a few cents, after putting hundreds of gallons of gas in you vehicle each year, those few cents are going to add up to quite a sum of money.
  4. Get Moving
    • You can save some money on gas if you start walking to where you are going, or you can ride a bike as well. You will not have to worry about paying to park your car, and the exercise will be great for you body. If you are walking or biking you will not have to worry about those huge traffic jams either.
  5. Take Care of Your Car
    • It is always important to take care of your car so it gets the best gas mileage possible. Also be sure to plan where you are going before you go so you will not have to backtrack and waste gas. If you can, you should use your air conditioning as little as possible because using it takes more gas. Roll down your windows and you will use less gas.
  6. Check your Tires
    • It is important that you check the air pressure in your tires as often as possible. If your tires are too low, or the pressure in them is unequal it can make your car burn more gas. You should also be careful how you drive. If you take off from every red light very fast you are going to burn more fuel, so it is best to take off a little slower.

These are a few tips that can help the money conscious person to save money on gas. Even as gas prices drop, these tips can still help you to save more money. Conservation is important, so take advantage of these tips, save money, and save gas.

Top 10 Tips for Blogging

I just read an article on how to build and maintain a blog audience, and found it to be very informative. There are 28 tips in the article, and most are very good. After reading it I decided that 28 can be a bit much, so I compiled my own list with just 10 items. Many of them are listed in the article I read, but some of them are a few of my own. Give my post a read and compare it to the 28 tip article and let me know what you think.

  1. Stay on topic.
    • Opinions are generally accepted but the content of the items in the blog should all relate to a general theme. Unless you have an uncanny knack for wit, humor or cynicism, the majority of your readers will be interested in the content that relates to a specific defined theme or loosely defined area of interest. Most readers won't care that you eat Cheerios for breakfast. They may, however, be interested in the fact that vinegar takes out stains and that toilet paper rolls make great wreaths. Define a topic and stick to it. This will ensure that you create a loyal following of interested readers.
  2. Stay informative.
    • If you are attempting to create the impression that you are knowledgeable about a specific industry or sector, be sure that you stay current on news. If you are endorsing a product or voicing an opinion, be sure to check your facts; your reputation is at stake. If you are offering an opinion, be sure to qualify your post, making it clear that the content is intended as an editorial.
  3. Old news is not news.
    • While blogging every day can be a drain, it is important that the information presented is current and accurate, writing an article or blurb about something that happened 6 months ago, will not be of interest to many. Telling your audience that Martha Stewart was convicted and will be going to prison, after her sentence is completed will make people question the value of your columns.
  4. Adhere to a schedule.
    • Create a schedule and stick to it. Realizing that blogging requires time and effort, don't create unrealistic expectations and be unable to deliver. An occasional lapse or holiday is generally understood but readers returning to find stale, out-dated content are going to find another blog with similar content. New blogs and RSS feeds are popping up on a daily basis. If you have worked hard to develop an audience and a community you don't want to lose them due to lack of communication.
  5. Clarity and simplicity.
    • Keep your posts and blog entries clear and easy to understand. Remember, the web is global and expressions, idioms and acronyms don't always translate. Sometimes a little explanation goes a long way.
  6. Keyword-rich.
    • If the goal of your blog is to increase your visibility, include related keywords in the title of the blog. Use the title as a headline to attract interest. Each item post should have a title that will attract attention but still be relevant to the post. The title should be no longer than 10-12 words.
  7. Quantity matters.
    • In order to attract the attention of search engines, you will need to develop content and substance. A headline or simple sentence is not going to generate the interest of readers or help with search engine ranking. Be sure to archive old blog posts to develop a large portal of similarly-themed content.
  8. Frequency.
    • If your blog content is updated frequently, search engines will tend to spider the pages at regular intervals.
  9. Spell checking and proof-reading.
    • It only takes a few extra moments and can save you from having to make embarrassing explanations. Remember that whatever you publish on the Internet can be found and archived. Think carefully about what you post before doing so.
  10. RSS.
    • RSS will increase your blog's reach. It is important that you include your blog's content in an RSS feed to increase readership and distribution.

Most weblog audiences are small, but with time and regular updates audiences grow. Bloggers may never have more than a few hundred readers, but the people who return to regularly are generally interested in what you have to say.

Giovanni taught killer

How do we prevent the sort of break down that occurred at Virginia Tech in the future. As I stated in an earlier post, more restrictions on guns is not the answer. He obtained the guns used legally, and he had no real criminal record. There were indications of such a break down might occur in his writing according to the article below from his English teachers. There were also police contacts with a stalking case from 2005, but because no one pressed charges he ended up with no criminal record to prevent gun purchases. He was even submitted to a mental health facility for fear of him committing suicide. If no one presses charges in these sorts of cases, and the person is evaluated by a mental health facility, how do we prevent this from happening again? How do we walk the line of protection of privacy, and the protection of the public?

Poet describes Virginia Tech shooter as 'mean' student

Former Cincinnatian Nikki Giovanni, a Virginia Tech professor, says she wasn’t surprised when officials identified one of her former students as the gunman in the campus massacre.

"I knew when it happened that that's probably who it was. I would have been shocked if it wasn't," Giovanni told CNN, referring to Cho Seung Hui, a 23-year-old senior English major.

"I've taught troubled youngsters. I've taught crazy people. It was the meanness that bothered me. It was a, really, mean streak."

Giovanni, other English professors and Cho’s classmates were alarmed by his class writings - pages filled with twisted, violence-drenched writing.

"It was not bad poetry. It was intimidating," Giovanni said.

Giovanni said her students were so unnerved by Cho's behavior, including taking pictures of them with his cell phone, that some stopped coming to class and she had security check on her room. She eventually had him taken out of her class, saying she would quit if he wasn't removed.

Giovanni, a poet well-known in Cincinnati, delivered an inspiring message to close the campus convocation in honor of the victims Tuesday. ( (Watch the video).

Lucinda Roy, a co-director of creative writing at Virginia Tech, said she tutored Cho after he left Giovanni’s class.

"He was so distant and so lonely," she told ABC's "Good Morning America" Wednesday. "It was almost like talking to a hole, as though he wasn't there most of the time. He wore sunglasses and his hat very low so it was hard to see his face."

Roy also described using a code word with her assistant to call police if she ever felt threatened by Cho, but she said she never used it.

Cho's writing was so disturbing, though, he was referred to the university's counseling service, said Carolyn Rude, chairwoman of the university's English department.

In screenplays Cho wrote for a class last fall, characters throw hammers and attack with chainsaws, said a student who attended Virginia Tech last fall. In another, Cho concocted a tale of students who fantasize about stalking and killing a teacher who sexually molested them.

"When we read Cho's plays, it was like something out of a nightmare," former classmate Ian MacFarlane, now an AOL employee, wrote in a blog posted on an AOL Web site.

"The plays had really twisted, macabre violence that used weapons I wouldn't have even thought of."

CHO ACCUSED OF STALKING

Cho was been accused of stalking two female students and had been taken to a mental health facility in 2005 after an acquaintance worried he might be suicidal, police said Wednesday.

Cho had concerned one woman enough with his calls and e-mail in 2005 that police were called in, said Police Chief Wendell Flinchum.

He said the woman declined to press charges, and neither woman was among the victims of Monday's massacre on the Virginia Tech campus.

During the stalking second incident, also in late 2005, the department received a call from an acquaintance of Cho's who was concerned that he might be suicidal, and Cho was taken to a mental health facility, Flinchum said. About the same time, in fall 2005, Cho's professor informally shared some concerns about the young man's writing but no official report was filed, he said.

Flinchum said he knew of no other police incidents involving Cho until the deadly shootings Monday, first at a girl's dorm room and then a classroom building across campus. Neither of the stalking victims was among the victims.

Ex-Bengal's wife faces sex charges

What is happening to Cincinnati? This is like the third case of out of control high school parties where adults are either taking advantage of kids, or providing alcohol. No wonder our society is falling apart, we are not raising our children to respect rules, and even encouraging them to break rules. They are learning there is no consequence for their actions. We must start punishing these adults, and rewarding those who are raising their children good values.

A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both.

Dwight D. Eisenhower, Inaugural Address, January 20, 1953
34th president of US 1953-1961 (1890 - 1969)

A Hollywood makeup artist and wife of a former Bengals player was arrested Monday on charges she had sexual contact with a high school student during parties at her Villa Hills home.

Jeni Lee Dinkel, 51, pleaded not guilty Monday to one count each of third-degree rape and third-degree sodomy after turning herself in to authorities. The Class D felonies each carry a penalty of one to five years in prison.

Dinkel represents Arbonne International cosmetics company and has been the makeup artist for 19 Hollywood films, including the Academy Award-winning "Forrest Gump" and "The Shawshank Redemption," according to her Web site. She is the wife of Tom Dinkel, who was a Bengals linebacker from 1978 to 1985. Her court file indicates that she has no prior criminal record.

Dinkel's accuser attends Covington Catholic High School with Dinkel's teenage son, authorities said.

"The investigation resulted from allegations that surfaced after officers had responded to the suspect's residence back in October for a loud party call," Villa Hills Detective Joe Schutzman said in a statement released Monday. "There were allegations that the suspect was providing alcoholic beverages to minors."

Kenton County Commonwealth's Attorney Rob Sanders said witnesses told police that Jeni Lee Dinkel was present on at least one occasion when police responded to complaints about underage drinking at her home.

"When police investigated these parties, they started hearing rumors about sexual contact between Mrs. Dinkel and an underage male," Sanders said.

March 22, a teenage boy told the Children's Advocacy Center that Dinkel had repeatedly engaged in sexual contact with him at her home during a four-month span in 2006, according to court records.

The boy, who was 15 at the time of the alleged incidents, told authorities that another juvenile had "walked in ... and witnessed one sexual encounter," according to court records. The juvenile witness later confirmed the boy's account, authorities said.

"The investigation's still ongoing," Sanders said.

Dinkel was arraigned Monday in Kenton District Court. She was taken into custody and released minutes later, after posting $2,500, or 10 percent, of a $25,000 bond, authorities said. She remains free but cannot have contact with her accuser or unrelated juveniles.

Her next scheduled court appearance is May 15.

A woman who answered the phone at the Dinkel home Monday afternoon identified herself as Jeni Lee Dinkel and referred all comments to attorney Bill Pitzer, who could not be reached for comment. A call to Mrs. Dinkel's agent at the Celestine Agency in Santa Monica, Calif., was not returned.

Attorney Rene Heinrich, who represents the family of the teen who told his story to a licensed professional last month, said her client and his family are seeking treatment.

"Just because the case involves (an alleged perpetrator who's) a female and a male doesn't mean it's not sexual abuse," Heinrich, of Donovan Law, said. "This is very traumatic for a child whether it's male on female or female on male. This is very difficult on the victim and his family."

How To Make Your Hotel Reservations Online

Very often, a vacation would mean visiting a place which is totally foreign to you. The better and more famous your destination, the more difficult might be to get the hotel reservations you’re looking for or at least expecting. Sometimes, leaving things to chance can turn into disaster and it might not be such a good idea. There are great ways to book a hotel in advance, according to your exact specifications, i.e. location, star category, budget, amenities, etc.

Advantages Of Making Your Hotel Reservations Online

Technology has always been human being’s best friend. Hence, why not put technology to good use here, as well? Yes, you could use the Internet for checking out what types of hotels exist in the area you are planning to vacation to and then you can learn all that there is to know about the hotels that are available to you. Not only that, but you can also book your hotel on the internet, as well. How easy could it get?

The advantage with booking your hotel reservations online is that you can literally have a tour of the hotel you are planning to stay at, without moving an inch from your home. Most of the hotel websites (and travel agent websites as well) will have a virtual tour of the hotel ready for those who want to see the details of the premises. In this way, you could see the rooms and the amenities, such as the bar, the restaurants, the shopping arcades, the entertainment areas, etc.

Besides making the hotel reservations, you can also use the Internet to inform and request the hotel for any special arrangements that you might need. These could be anything - such as an extra bed/mattress for children, pick-up and/or drop from /to the airport, booking seats on sightseeing tours, booking tickets at local festivities, parks, aquariums or whatever else the local attractions might be, and so on.

Booking your hotel reservations online would also mean the possibility of a substantial discount – if you make the booking some three or four months in advance. There are many hotels that offer heavy discounts when accommodation with them is booked well in advance. Why not plan your vacation well enough and avail of this wonderful opportunity.

Lastly, you can use the occasion of making your online hotel reservations to educate yourself about the class of the hotels in the region. However, you should keep in mind that everyone has different tastes. What might be three star to one person might be four to another. In this sense, you should trust your gut on what hotel will best accommodate your needs.

Va. Tech: Gunman Student From S. Korea

Now I realize that this is a terribly tragedy, and my prayers go out to the families and friends of those effected by this event. However, I must wonder how long it will take the anti- gun cooks to try and pass new gun laws that will further restrict the access to guns to law abiding citizens. This event could not have been changed if guns were further banned, as a matter of fact the school was a "gun-free" zone. It goes to prove that crime cannot be stopped by restricting the rights of people who follow the law. Those that do not follow the law now will NOT be deterred by further legislation. Could this event have been changed if one of those other students had a right to carry a gun, and was allowed to carry it on school grounds? Please remember that it is our obligation to protect ourselves, and that we should not rely on government to do this for us. We have a constitutional right to carry arms for this reason.

The following is an article of the events yesterday. While reading be sure to also ask yourself if it would be different with more gun restrictions.

A Virginia Tech senior from South Korea killed at least 30 people locked inside a classroom building in the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history, the university and police said Tuesday.

Ballistics tests also found that one of the guns used in that attack was also used in a shooting two hours earlier at a Virginia Tech dorm that left two people dead, Virginia State Police said.

Police identified the classroom shooter as Cho Seung-Hui, 23, a senior from South Korea who was in the English department and lived in another dorm on campus. They said Cho committed suicide after the attacks, and there was no indication Tuesday of a possible motive.

"He was a loner, and we're having difficulty finding information about him," school spokesman Larry Hincker said.

Two law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because the information had not been announced, said Cho's fingerprints were found on the guns used in both shootings. The serial numbers on the two weapons had been filed off, the officials said.

One law enforcement official said Cho's backpack contained a receipt for a March purchase of a Glock 9 mm pistol.

Col. Steve Flaherty, superintendent of the Virginia State Police, said it was reasonable to assume that Cho was the shooter in both attacks but that link was yet definitive.

"There's no evidence of any accomplice at either event, but we're exploring the possibility," he said.

Cho was a permanent legal resident of the United States, according to a Homeland Security Department official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the information had not been announced.

A memorial service was planned for the victims Tuesday afternoon at the university, and President Bush planned to attend, the White House said. Gov. Tim Kaine was flying back to Virginia from Tokyo for the 2 p.m. convocation.

The first deadly attack, at a dormitory around 7:15 a.m., left two people dead. But some students said they didn't get their first warning about a danger on campus until two hours later, in an e-mail at 9:26 a.m. By then the second attack had begun.

Two students told NBC's "Today" show they were unaware of the dorm shooting when they walked into Norris Hall for a German class where the gunman later opened fire.

The victims in Norris Hall were found in four different classrooms and a stairwell, Flaherty said. Cho was found dead in one of those classrooms, he said.

Derek O'Dell, his arm in a cast after being shot, described a shooter who fired away in "eerily silence" with "no specific target - just taking out anybody he could."

After the gunman left the room, students could hear him shooting other people down the hall. O'Dell said he and other students barricaded the door so the shooter couldn't get back in - though he later tried.

"After he couldn't get the door open he tried shooting it open ... but the gunshots were blunted by the door," O'Dell said.

A federal law enforcement official said Tuesday he had been told by other federal law enforcement officials that the two guns recovered in the shooting had had their serial numbers scraped off. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the information had not been announced.

The slayings left people of this once-peaceful mountain town and the university at its heart praying for the victims and struggling to find order in a tragedy of such unspeakable horror it defies reason.

"For Ryan and Emily and for those whose names we do not know," one woman pleaded in a church service Monday night.

Another mourner added: "For parents near and far who wonder at a time like this, 'Is my child safe?'"

That question promises to haunt Blacksburg long after Monday's attacks. Investigators offered no motive, and the gunman's name was not immediately released.

The shooting began about 7:15 a.m. on the fourth floor of West Ambler Johnston, a high-rise coed dormitory where two people died.

Police were still investigating around 9:15 a.m., when a gunman wielding two handguns and carrying multiple clips of ammunition stormed Norris Hall, a classroom building a half-mile away on the other side of the 2,600-acre campus.

At least 20 people were taken to hospitals after the second attack, some seriously injured. Many found themselves trapped after someone, apparently the shooter, chained and locked Norris Hall doors from the inside.

Students jumped from windows, and students and faculty carried away some of the wounded without waiting for ambulances to arrive.

SWAT team members with helmets, flak jackets and assault rifles swarmed over the campus. A student used his cell-phone camera to record the sound of bullets echoing through a stone building.

Inside Norris, the attack began with a thunderous sound from Room 206 - "what sounded like an enormous hammer," said Alec Calhoun, a 20-year-old junior who was in a solid mechanics lecture in a classroom next door.

Screams followed an instant later, and the banging continued. When students realized the sounds were gunshots, Calhoun said, he started flipping over desks to make hiding places. Others dashed to the windows of the second-floor classroom, kicking out the screens and jumping from the ledge of Room 204, he said.

"I must've been the eighth or ninth person who jumped, and I think I was the last," said Calhoun, of Waynesboro, Va. He landed in a bush and ran.

Calhoun said that the two students behind him were shot, but that he believed they survived. Just before he climbed out the window, Calhoun said, he turned to look at his professor, who had stayed behind, apparently to prevent the gunman from opening the door.

The instructor was killed, Calhoun said.

Erin Sheehan, who was in the German class near Calhoun's room, told the student newspaper, the Collegiate Times, that she was one of only four of about two dozen people in the class to walk out of the room. The rest were dead or wounded, she said.

She said the gunman "was just a normal-looking kid, Asian, but he had on a Boy Scout-type outfit. He wore a tan button-up vest, and this black vest, maybe it was for ammo or something."

The gunman first shot the professor in the head and then fired on the class, another student, Trey Perkins, told The Washington Post. The gunman was about 19 years old and had a "very serious but very calm look on his face," he said.

"Everyone hit the floor at that moment," said Perkins, 20, of Yorktown, Va., a sophomore studying mechanical engineering. "And the shots seemed like it lasted forever."

At an evening news conference, Police Chief Wendell Flinchum refused to dismiss the possibility that a co-conspirator or second shooter was involved. He said police had interviewed a male who was a "person of interest" in the dorm shooting and who knew one of the victims, but he declined to give details.

"I'm not saying there's a gunman on the loose," Flinchum said. Ballistics tests will help explain what happened, he said.

Some students bitterly complained that the first e-mail warning arrived more than two hours after the first shots.

"I think the university has blood on their hands because of their lack of action after the first incident," said Billy Bason, 18, who lives on the seventh floor of the dorm.

University President Charles Steger emphasized that the university closed off the dorm after the first attack and decided to rely on e-mail and other electronic means to spread the word, but said that with 11,000 people driving onto campus first thing in the morning, it was difficult to get the word out.

He said that before the e-mail was sent, the university began telephoning resident advisers in the dorms and sent people to knock on doors. Students were warned to stay inside and away from the windows.

"We can only make decisions based on the information you had at the time. You don't have hours to reflect on it," Steger said.

The 9:26 e-mail had few details: "A shooting incident occurred at West Amber Johnston earlier this morning. Police are on the scene and are investigating."

Until Monday, the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history was in Killeen, Texas, in 1991, when George Hennard plowed his pickup truck into a Luby's Cafeteria and shot 23 people to death, then himself.

Nine students remained hospitalized Tuesday at Montgomery Regional Hospital, all of them stable, CEO Scott Hill said. Two others had been transferred to other hospitals with a Level I trauma center.

Their families "are by the bedside, which is a good thing," Hill said.

Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem had three remaining patients, all in stable condition, with one expected to be discharged later Tuesday, Hill said.

The massacre Monday took place almost eight years to the day after the Columbine High bloodbath near Littleton, Colo. On April 20, 1999, two teenagers killed 12 fellow students and a teacher before taking their own lives.

Previously, the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history was a rampage that took place in 1966 at the University of Texas at Austin, where Charles Whitman climbed the clock tower and opened fire with a rifle from the 28th-floor observation deck. He killed 16 people before he was shot to death by police.

Founded in 1872, Virginia Tech is nestled in southwestern Virginia, about 160 miles west of Richmond. With more than 25,000 full-time students, it has the state's largest full-time student population. The school is best known for its engineering school and its powerhouse Hokies football team.

Police said there had been bomb threats on campus over the past two weeks but that they had not determined whether they were linked to the shootings.

It was second time in less than a year that the campus was closed because of gunfire.

Last August, the opening day of classes was canceled when an escaped jail inmate allegedly killed a hospital guard off campus and fled to the Tech area. A sheriff's deputy was killed just off campus. The accused gunman, William Morva, faces capital murder charges.

Among the dead were professors Liviu Librescu and Kevin Granata, said Ishwar K. Puri, the head of the engineering science and mechanics department.

Librescu, an Israeli, was born in Romania and was known internationally for his research in aeronautical engineering, Puri wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Granata and his students researched muscle and reflex response and robotics. Puri called him one of the top five biomechanics researchers in the country working on movement dynamics in cerebral palsy.

Also killed was Ryan Clark, a student from Martinez, Ga., who had several majors and carried a 4.0 grade-point average, said Vernon Collins, coroner in Columbia County, Ga.

His friend Gregory Walton, a 25-year-old who graduated last year, said he feared the nightmare had just begun.

"I knew when the number was so large that I would know at least one person on that list," said Walton, a banquet manager. "I don't want to look at that list. I don't want to.
